September was a big month for new releases that were mastered here.
The most notable was The Replacements ‘Tim (Let It Bleed Edition)’. As a Replacements fan, I knew this was a special one, but I didn’t expect to see so much press about it. Pitchfork, The New Yorker, The New York Times, Rolling Stone, Spin, Mojo, Uncut, Variety, Consequence, and even Associated Press all had something to say about it.
If somehow you missed it, The Replacements 1985 album and major label debut ‘Tim’ which was often criticized for its strange production and even stranger mix, has been remixed by the legendary Ed Stasium, and then mastered here. Reviews have been overwhelmingly positive but if you don’t like album remixes, or are just attached to the nostalgia of the original mix, I also remastered the original 1985 mix and word on the street is that this is the best sounding digital version of that mix to date.
The 1xLP/4CD boxed set from RHINO Records also includes a disc of outtakes and unreleased songs, including a great new mix of “Nowhere Is My Home” which sounds better than ever, and a live show from Chicago in early 1986, just before their infamous Saturday Night Live performance.
Due to some kind of last minute error, no mastering credits were printed on the physical boxed set, but I can assure you the entire set was mastered / remastered here at Mystery Room Mastering.
Also from RHINO Records, released on the same day as the ‘Tim (Let It Bleed Edition)’ is a new 2CD or 3LP set of ‘We Sing. We Dance. We Steal Things.’. The Deluxe 15th Anniversary edition contains 14 bonus tracks which were all mastered here, along with the remaster of the original album which is now available to stream in high-resolution for the first time.
The new album from Lydia Loveless called “Nothing’s Gonna Stand In My Way Again” was also released on September 22nd (big day) via Bloodshot Records. It was a real pleasure to master this album and the production and mixing from Sean Sullivan was just perfect for this album.
Buffalo Nichols released a great new album via Fat Possum Records called ‘The Fatalist’ that was a real joy to master here. It’s streaming everywhere, and available on vinyl HERE.
A few other great albums that were mastered here and came out in September as well include new ones from Emily Kinney, Kurt Baker, as well as a ton of singles and other odds & ends.
Lastly, I’ll leave you with the video for the song “Dusk” by the band Dusk from Appleton, WI. It comes from their excellent new album ‘Glass Pastures’ comes out Oct. 20th via Don Giovanni Records, and is available for pre-order now.
